This weekend, the Lambs traveled to South Wales to take on the Boys Club of Wales at Pyle RFC. With challenging weather conditions ahead, the squad assembled in the changing room, where formalities were completed, and shirts were presented to eight new debutantes: Tom B, Jamie B, Jacob K, Samuel M, Joe C, Harrison E, Fin T, Malin and Semesa. Once kitted up, we took to the field for a crucial warm-up, preparing ourselves for the physical battle ahead.
First Half: Making the Most of the Conditions
With the wind at our backs and playing downhill, we knew we had to capitalise early. From the outset, we applied pressure, pinning the Boys Club of Wales deep in their own half. A well-executed attacking sequence from scrums and line-outs saw John W power over for the opening try after a quick tap penalty setting the tone for the match with Jensen K converting.
However, the opposition responded with intensity. They worked their way up-field and, after a well-drilled line-out and driving maul, their hooker broke away to score, leveling the game at 7-7. Moments later, they struck again, breaking from their own half with a slick passing move. Their winger linked up with the captain, who finished under the posts, putting us behind 14-7.
Determined to respond, we built momentum and entered their 22, implementing our newly structured forward play. A well-worked passage of quick hands and precision offloads saw Jacob K cross for our second try. Unfortunately, the angle made it difficult for Jensen K to convert, leaving us trailing 14-12 at halftime.
Second Half: Battling Against the Elements
With the wind now against us and the conditions worsening, we knew we had to dig deep. The Boys Club of Wales used the wind to their advantage, keeping us pinned in our own half. Following a controversial missed knock-on by the referee, they capitalized on the moment, kicking through and diving over for another try, extending their lead to 21-12.
Refusing to back down, we fought our way back into their 22, maintaining relentless pressure. From a dominant forward phase, Henry E spotted a gap and, in classic scrum-half fashion, sniped through for our third try. Once again, the difficult angle prevented the conversion, leaving us trailing 21-17.
Sensing a shift in momentum, we continued to push forward, gaining confidence with ball in hand. Jack B cut a sharp line through their defense, and just as the last defender closed in, he delivered a perfectly timed pop pass to Will B who finished clinically for our final try of the game. This edged us ahead 22-21 in what was becoming an enthralling contest.
Final Minutes: Grit and Determination
With just minutes remaining, the Boys Club of Wales applied relentless pressure, pinning us deep in our 22 with repeated tactical kicks. They opted for a series of driving mauls from line-outs, testing our defensive resolve. Each time, our pack stood strong, repelling their advances with outstanding grit and determination.
A crucial turnover saw us regain possession, and with one final set-piece execution, we secured the line-out and sent the ball into touch to seal a hard-fought victory.
A Game to Remember
At the final whistle, both teams knew they had left everything on the field in a fiercely competitive match. The Lambs displayed immense resilience, teamwork, and character to come from behind and secure the win in challenging conditions.
As always, the Boys Club of Wales were fantastic hosts, and after the post-match formalities, it was time to bid farewell to the players who had traveled from all over the country to represent the Lambs. A truly memorable fixture and another step forward for this special group.
